What harm is there in wearing high heels?

We’re not suggesting that you never wear heels again (although it would do you a whole lot of good). However, cutting down your use should be considered. There are two big factors that make the most impact – frequency and hours spent wearing them at a time. If you’re wearing heels every day, you’ll be doing a lot of damage. However, wearing them for multiple hours at a time (we’re talking 8 +) on the odd occasion can be just as bad.

There’s a lot of appeal to wearing heels. They can make us appear taller, more powerful and sexier. Some of us may wear them only on special occasions, whilst others may wear them every day to work, either out of choice or as part of a dress code. What most of us don’t realize is that heels are actually terrible for our health. Whether it’s for a single day or on a daily basis, a few hours wearing heels can start to do damage on our joints and tendons.

Here are just a few negative health effects that heels could be having on your body.

ARTHRITIC KNEES

One of the leading causes of arthritis in the knees is regularly wearing high heels. These shoes force us to walk on the balls of our feet, shifting our weight onto this part of our feet and causing our knees to become misaligned. This can result in osteoarthritis, which in some bad cases can require surgery.

BENT TOES

High heels can often cause us to develop clawed toes – a condition known as hammer toes. Hammer toes can be treated and it’s recommended if they’ve started to become painful. Other nasty foot problems can also develop from having our toes crushed by heels including ingrown toenails and bunions.

STIFF TENDONS

Wearing high heels a lot can shorten and stiffen the Achilles tendon. This can make it difficult to extend one’s leg and in serious cases can affect walking later in life, as the feet are no longer able to flatten out for regular shoe use.

PAINFUL HIPS

The hips are pushed forward when wearing heels, which can start to cause strain and result in pain in and around the hips. This can damage our entire posture later on in life.

BACK SORENESS

By pushing the hips out of place, extra stress is also placed on the spine. This can develop into a back ache later on in life which may require making lifestyle changes such as going for regular physiotherapy and even having to sleep on an orthopaedic mattress. Some neck pain has even been attributed to regular high heel use.

THE SOLUTION

We’re not suggesting that you never wear heels again (although it would do you a whole lot of good). However, cutting down your use should be considered. There are two big factors that make the most impact – frequency and hours spent wearing them at a time. If you’re wearing heels every day, you’ll be doing a lot of damage. However, wearing them for multiple hours at a time (we’re talking 8 +) on the odd occasion can be just as bad.

The height of the heels is also an important factor. Lowering your heels or considering platforms instead could take a lot of the stress off the balls of your feet, lessening the damage.

She is, therefore, always on the lookout for what could help achieve this. And yes, she shares them openly, believing “knowledge about what works won’t be much use if it’s not known by as many as possible”.
