New research, appearing in\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftracking.us.nylas.com%2Fl%2F757c13d88b554f67bcf4d072bf1b82c4%2F0%2Ff9c56b4e29dd3708efd8c85230943d2ba68a97abe3689dfde2ab8d4057afeb12%3Fcache_buster%3D1739381330&amp;data=05%7C02%7CCFINDER%40pitt.edu%7Ccdd7011e20864ea2935108dd4b8ab7a7%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C638749781331116648%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lfvkgvYqUGQKahr436y4Ps7a08ZxYXMDuJj3MnQ0yIA%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><em><strong>JAMA Network Open<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>,<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0now shows the true impact on children and their mental health.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew that\u00a0eviction or housing loss can impact the adults in a household, but we didn\u2019t know as much about what happen to kids in families facing eviction or housing loss\u201d said\u00a0Jamie Hanson, associate professor in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and\u00a0the paper\u2019s primary author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this new study<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>Hanson used data from&nbsp;over 36,000 families and looked at how a parent\u2019s anxiety or stress about&nbsp;eviction, foreclosur, or housing loss was related to mental health issues in their kids.&nbsp;Stress about eviction or housing loss was associated with depression and anxiety disorders. \u201cWhen a caregiver was really worried, this was related to a major increase, 10% to 35%, in depression,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly important was the impact on young children, under the age of 9. \u201cNormally, we don\u2019t see high rates of depression in young kids, those younger than 8 or 9; but&nbsp;a parent\u2019s anxiety or stress about&nbsp;housing loss was related to those issues being reported more,\u201d Hanson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of note, stress about&nbsp;housing loss wasn\u2019t related to increases in all mental health issues. \u201cThere weren\u2019t major connections with&nbsp;ADHD and behavioral problems. We controlled for lots of other factors and didn\u2019t see strong links,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In sum, the stress increased the odds that children \u201cwill internalize issues, such as depression and anxiety,\u201d the author wrote in the paper titled, \u201cStress About Eviction or Loss of Housing and Child Mental Health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNotably, eviction and foreclosures are not equally distributed across demographics \u2014 it disproportionately affects individuals from minoritized racial and ethnic groups, the economically marginalized, and families with children in their homes,\u201d Hanson wrote in the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cOur findings underscore&nbsp;the urgent need for policies and programs to address housing instability and protect children&#8217;s mental well-being. It doesn\u2019t need to be this way. We could do more housing assistance; we could allow court records about eviction to be sealed for a period of time\u2026.
