Last August, in celebration of National Lung Month, frontrunners in the Philippine healthcare industry coalesced to increase public education on various lung diseases. The event \u201cLungs Matter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness\u201d was put up by the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, Psoriasis Philippines, Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Scleroderma Awareness Philippines, and Philippine College of Chest Physicians, supported by pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held at The\nBayleaf Hotel in Intramuros, Manila, the event was attended by esteemed\nhealthcare experts who shared fruitful insights on popular and lesser-known\nrespiratory diseases, and the basics of lung care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis National\nLung Month is a good opportunity for us to focus the public\u2019s attention on\nrespiratory wellness, spread more awareness on the different kinds of lung\ndisease, and call on a collective movement to support healthier air,\u201d said Dr.\nMae Campomanes, Chair for the Council on Occupational and Interstitial Lung\nDiseases, PCCP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cLungs\nMatter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness\u201d event took guests on\nvarious forum talks, pocket activities, and wellness exercises, such as\nBreathwork Practices and Shibashi \u2014 an 18-posture exercise that coordinates\nmovement with breathing and concentration. It was then followed by a\nmeditational walk in the historic Arroceros Forest Park. Known as\n“Manila’s last lung”, the Arroceros Forest Park was a catalyst for\nbetter and healthier environment in the aim of fostering lung health. The walk\nwas done in solidarity of all partners to focus the public\u2019s attention on\nrespiratory wellness and to encourage participants to make a personal pledge to\nsupporting lung health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading the\nfight against lung diseases<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 300,000 cases of acute respiratory infection over the course of six months. Among the most common lung diseases known to Filipinos are asthma, a disease of the airways in the lungs caused by inflammation; pneumonia, which happens when fluids build up in the lungs; tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease caused by germs; and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an inflammation that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Other rare lung diseases that are equally important, but which are difficult to diagnose are interstitial lung disease (ILD), which is a group of disorders that cause progressive scarring of lung tissue. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a\nwide range of topics for us to touch on regarding respiratory wellness. We at\nBoehringer Ingelheim, are committed to supporting our health organizations and\nmedical societies to further increase disease education. We want to help push\nprevention and early diagnosis at the forefront so we can safeguard the\nhealth of many Filipinos,\u201d said Dr. Greta Cortez, Head of Medicine for\nBoehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the\n\u201cLungs Matter: Raising Awareness for Respiratory Wellness\u201d event, advocates\nchampion the patients\u2019 quality of life by putting importance on prevention and\nearly detection. This educational discussion, in honor of National Lung Month,\naims to inform the public about the predispositions and risks associated with\ncommon to life-threatening respiratory diseases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
