That&#8217;s swell; but there are tips on how you can make the best of every boating experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Safe Boating Campaign, a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating, shares important boating safety tips for boaters to make the most of every boating trip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe wearing a life jacket is the simplest way to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones while enjoying a day on the water,&#8221; said\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Yvonne Pentz<\/span>, communications director of the National Safe Boating Council in the US. &#8220;As you make plans&#8230; remember to have fun, make memories, and most importantly, boat responsibly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boaters are encouraged to follow these boating safety tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Take a boating safety course.<\/b>\u00a0Gain valuable knowledge and on-water experience in a boating safety course with many options for novice to experienced boaters.<\/li>\n<li><b>Check equipment.\u00a0<\/b>Schedule a free vessel safety check with local coast guard to make sure all essential equipment is present, working and in good condition.<\/li>\n<li><b>Make a float plan.<\/b>\u00a0Always let someone on shore know the trip itinerary, including operator and passenger information, boat type and registration, and communication equipment on board.<\/li>\n<li><b>Wear a life jacket.<\/b>\u00a0Make sure everyone is wearing a properly fitting coast guard-approved life jacket.<\/li>\n<li><b>Use an engine cutoff device.<\/b>\u00a0An engine cutoff device is a proven safety device to stop the boat&#8217;s engine should the operator unexpectedly fall overboard.<\/li>\n<li><b>Watch the weather.<\/b>\u00a0Always check the forecast before departing on the water and frequently during the excursion.<\/li>\n<li><b>Know what&#8217;s going on around you at all times.\u00a0<\/b>Nearly a quarter of all reported boating accidents in 2017 were caused by operator inattention or improper lookout.<\/li>\n<li><b>Know where you&#8217;re going and travel at safe speeds.\u00a0<\/b>Be familiar with the area, local boating speed zones and always travel at a safe speed.<\/li>\n<li><b>Never boat under the influence.<\/b>\u00a0A BUI is involved in one-third of all recreational boating fatalities.
