Today, our fishers are catching at least P60M more seafood every season,&#8221; shares Bindoy Mayor Valente Yap at the recently-concluded Ocean Heroes Assembly, which convened 20 coastal heroes recognized for protecting the waters of the Ta\u00f1on Strait, a major fishing area which feeds millions of people in the Visayas.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/protect-the-seas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3682\" src=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/protect-the-seas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/protect-the-seas.jpg 642w, https:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/protect-the-seas-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/protect-the-seas-220x165.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe eliminated blast fishing within five years. It took time, but our small steps eventually bore fruit,\u201d recalls Yap. \u201cFishers initially resisted conservation, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Now they actively protect Bindoy\u2019s municipal waters to continue reaping the benefits brought by healthier and more productive seas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fishers can earn over P500,000 just by growing seaweed, proving that there are many ways to produce seafood,\u201d adds Manjuyod Mayor Felix Sy. The heroes convened on 30 August in Cebu City to share ideas on how best to protect the waters of the Ta\u00f1on Strait, an area where various NGOs including Oceana, Rare, Tambuyog and the Coastal Conservation &amp; Education Foundation (CCEF) are working to conserve.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2016, the Ocean Heroes Awards is a partnership between Oceana, Rare, the Ta\u00f1on Strait\u00a0Protected Area Office,\u00a0Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, plus the provincial governments of Cebu, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to honor courageous community leaders working to sustainably-manage marine ecosystems in the Ta\u00f1on Strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9021830171MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The 2016 winners were\u00a0<\/span>Norlan Pagal, Oliver Dayupay, Ve<span lang=\"EN-US\">da Raunillo and Roberto Quigay, while\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Virgilio Aviso, Renato Buenviaje, Jocelyn Moya-Hekrdle and Mariano Sarcol comprised this year\u2019s awardees. &#8220;Most heroes are recognized when they die, but Oceana celebrates those who not just live \u2013 but actively fight to keep our oceans alive,\u201d says 2017 awardee Jocelyn Moya-Hekrdle.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Illegal and destructive fishing activities such as illegal commercial fishing, blast-fishing continue to destroy marine ecosystems in the Visayas, eroding the capacity of reefs to produce food. \u201cThrough strong collaborations, we aim to end illegal fishing within the park,\u201d promises\u00a0<\/span>Ta\u00f1on Strait Park Superintendent Am Prospero Lendio.<\/p>\n<p>The Ta\u00f1on Strait is a 161-kilometer strip dividing the provinces of Cebu and Negros Island. The Strait is one of the largest and most productive Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the country, hosting 63% of the country\u2019s coral species and 14 types of whale and dolphin, while providing food and livelihood for 42 towns, cities and municipalities in Cebu, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Ocean Heroes are the vanguards and voices, the protectors of Ta\u00f1on Strait,\u201d concludes Oceana Vice-president Atty.
