With the peak travel season under way, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reminding travelers to\u00a0Europe<\/span>\u00a0and other global destinations to take steps to protect themselves against measles amid outbreaks of the disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

More than 14,000 cases of measles have been reported in\u00a0Europe<\/span>\u00a0since\u00a0January 2016<\/span>, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. In the past year, 35 people across\u00a0Europe<\/span>\u00a0have died from the disease, according to the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Measles cases have been reported in\u00a015 European countries<\/a>\u00a0in 2017:\u00a0\u00a0Austria<\/span>,\u00a0Belgium<\/span>,\u00a0Bulgaria<\/span>, the\u00a0Czech Republic<\/span>,\u00a0Denmark<\/span>,\u00a0France<\/a>,\u00a0Germany<\/span>,\u00a0Hungary<\/span>,\u00a0Iceland<\/span>,\u00a0Italy<\/span>,\u00a0Portugal<\/span>,\u00a0Slovakia<\/span>,\u00a0Spain<\/span>,\u00a0Sweden<\/span>, and the\u00a0United Kingdom<\/span>, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.<\/p>\n

CDC has issued travel health notices for five European countries with measles outbreaks since\u00a0November 2016<\/span>; the most recent was\u00a0France<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0July 7<\/span>. The others are\u00a0Belgium<\/a>,\u00a0Germany<\/a>,\u00a0Italy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Romania<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How to protect yourself and others against measles<\/b><\/p>\n

The CDC recommends that anyone who isn’t protected against measles, either through vaccination or past infection, should get vaccinated, including before international travel. This simple step protects both travelers and people back home. Travelers should see their health care professional at least 4-6 weeks before any international travel. You may need this much time to complete a vaccine series, and your body needs time to build up immunity.<\/p>\n

Measles is one of the most contagious of all infectious diseases; approximately 9 out of 10 susceptible persons with close contact to a measles patient will develop measles. The virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can live for up to 2 hours in the air or on surfaces.<\/p>\n

People with measles usually have a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Some people also get an ear infection, diarrhea, or a serious lung infection such as pneumonia. Although severe cases are rare, measles can cause swelling of the brain and death.<\/p>\n

Any international travelers who develop measles symptoms should contact a doctor immediately.<\/p>\n
