For example, if your friend is a recovering alcoholic, you probably wouldn’t drink alcohol in front of them when you meet up. Everyone is entitled to autonomy over the things they do, whether it affects their health or not. But the issues start when a habit of yours can actually affect the health of those around you too, not just your own.

The most obvious example of this is smoking – we all know not to do it around children especially, and there are even some laws against this now. Although you can buy e-cigs with varying strengths of nicotine, they do all contain it. If ingested, nicotine can be poisonous to pets such as dogs and cats. This is known as nicotine toxicity, and occurs when the amount ingested is 5 to 1mg of nicotine per lb of bodyweight. 4mg per lb of bodyweight is considered to be a fatal dose. Clearly, dogs and cats are much more likely to ingest nicotine by eating it than to actually inhale it. So, on paper, vaping an e-liquid with a low nicotine content around your pet is unlikely to cause them any immediate harm. But, you will still need to be vigilant when it comes to choosing the nicotine percentage in your e-cigs. Visiting professional stores in places like Shoreditch will allow you to browse a huge range of products until you find one which is suitable for you.

SAFETY

Everyone knows that dogs (and cats, but mainly dogs) will eat just about anything. This is why most nicotine poisoning in animals comes from said animal eating a cigarette or a nicotine patch – rather than them inhaling second-hand smoke. With that in mind, it’s vital that your pet’s safety is paramount. Never let your pet lick the vapor that comes from your e-cig, as this is what could potentially cause nicotine poisoning. Always keep your e-cigs and e-liquids out of your pet’s reach and if possible, locked away. Dogs, in particular, can be attracted to the smell of e-liquids and therefore may try to eat them, so keep a close eye on your pet if you happen to be vaping near them.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS

If you vape frequently, try and do it in a room separate from your pet. Vaping is nowhere near as harmful for your pet (and you) as smoking is – but obviously, prevention is better than a cure. Or, if that isn’t an option for you in your home, just make sure the room you plan to vape in is well ventilated. Also, make sure that your pet is kept away from your e-cig whilst it is charging, as this can be potentially harmful to them as well.

Finally, if you suspect your pet may have ingested any nicotine, take them to the vets as an emergency straight away.
