The New Vois Association of the Philippines (NVAP), with Akbayan, HealthJustice, the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), CANCER May Pag-asa and other cancer support and persons with disabilities groups, called for the implementation of picture-based warnings on cigarette packs by November 5.\u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Right to Health Walk signaled the start of the countdown to the implementation of Republic Act 10643 or the Graphic Health Warning (GHW) law.<\/span><\/p>\n

NVAP president Emer Rojas said: \u201cWe are marching to fight for our right to health against the dangers of smoking. For many years we have seen thousands of people getting ill and dying of cancer due to tobacco consumption. Ten\u00a0Filipinos die per hour due to smoking. We say we had enough. Let us remind big tobacco that their time is up soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the law, tobacco companies will be given a one-year compliance period after the Department of Health (DOH) published GHW templates to be printed on cigarette packs. DOH published 12 images on November 2014 which means that based on the law\u2019s timeline, cigarette companies should be printing picture-based warnings by November this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Ulysses Dorotheo, FCTC program director of SEATCA, said:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cIt is important to monitor the implementation of the GHW law. Cigarette packs sold in Thailand with 85% health warnings are made by tobacco companies here in the Philippines, and they did that in only three months. The Philippines GHW law gives tobacco companies a year to comply, so they have no excuse for not printing graphic health warnings on time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

CHR Commissioner Karen Dumpit also expressed support for the GHW law that aims to promote and protect the right to health of people. She said that the law also involves the Filipinos\u2019 right to information about smoking harms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Atty. Karla Rocas from HealthJustice added: \u201cWe have the right to the highest attainable standard of health. We should remember that the GHW law is for all Filipinos, especially the youth and the poor, to protect them from the harms of smoking. Let\u2019s finish the fight and demand tobacco companies to fully comply with the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
