Cancer is tough. Whether they are a patient or a caregiver, the disease affects everyone it touches. That\u2019s why at the newly opened Asian Cancer Institute (ACI), cancer is treated and managed through medical expertise steeped in genuine care for the patient\u2019s well-being.

Operated by and located in the Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC), the ACI is a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility where transformative medical expertise meets genuine compassion and care for every patient that enters its doors.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We hope to increase the cure rate, the quality of care for the patient, and the quality of life of the patient,” said Dr. Enrico Tangco for Asian Hospital and Medical Center\u2019s ACI. Tangco, who is the Special Projects Coordinator of the said institution, aims to see the level of healthcare in the country redefined and elevated through the services of ACI.<\/p>\n

\u200bACI was created with the aim of providing modern services and advancing the rate of world-class scientific solutions, research and treatment for cancer patients. One of the main thrusts of the facility is its multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment and management here in the Philippines. This means that from day one of consultation with ACI, a team of experts coming from different fields sit and discuss every patient\u2019s case. The approach to every cancer patient is wholistic, from consultation, diagnosis, surgery, treatment, and palliative care, ACI\u2019s team of expert physicians and allied professionals will be with the patient through this ordeal.<\/p>\n

\u200bAside from this, ACI boasts of the latest and best equipment that will be used for both the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from cancer. Many of these state-of-the-art machines are housed under ACI\u2019s Conquer C Center which focuses on radiation, nuclear, and interventional oncology.<\/p>\n

\u200bSome of the technologies available for patients of the ACI are: Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Three Dimensional Conformal Therapy, Total Body Irradiation, Total Marrow Irradiation, Stereotactic Radiosurgery & Stereotactic Radiotherapy, and CT Simulator- 3 Dimensional scanning.<\/p>\n

\u200bBut one particular technology that ACI is proud of is the TomoTherapy HDA-H Series machine. TomoTherapy is a form of intensity modulated radiation therapy made more precise with Computed Tomography (CT) scanning technology. This technology is already available here in the country, but with ACI\u2019s newer and advanced TomoTherapy HDA-H unit more types of malignancies can be addressed. This machine delivers a very accurate treatment which addresses the tumor thus lessening the effects on other nearby healthy tissue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main idea is to really make us sure that the area being treated is the actual target,\u201d Dr. Tangco said. \u201cThis machine has an imager, just like a CT Scan that\u2019s built in into the machine and we can see before the treatment of the patient is in the proper position, so if he is not in the proper position we can make minor adjustments, so every time we treat we make sure that we hit the target.\u201d<\/p>\n

The machine also has the new TomoDirect delivery option which utilizes stationary radiation beams to precisely target more typical tumors. This provides the medical team with more ways to treat their patients. The machine enables treatment of a full spectrum of radiotherapy patients without compromise and enables planning and delivery of highly sculpted dose distributions.<\/p>\n

Another advantage is that TomoTherapy cuts treatment time significantly when compared to traditional radiotherapy. \u201cThe treatment can be very, very short. It can only be five days to ten days and the treatment is done,\u201d Tangco said.<\/p>\n

ACI will also utilize of the latest version of Brachytherapy with a cobalt source and can deliver a High Dose rate. Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy where radioactive sources are directly placed in a tumor or a body cavity.<\/p>\n

The Conquer C Center will also offer the more important Nuclear Medicine interventions in oncology like screening\/diagnostic bone scintigraphy and Iodine-131 therapy of thyroid cancer. ACI in collaboration with AHMC\u2019s Department of Radiology offers localized and minimally invasive procedures such as Radio Frequency Ablation and Chemo Embolization.<\/p>\n

With these technologies available within ACI, the ultimate goal is to give every patient a bigger fighting chance to defeat cancer and enjoy high quality of life. With almost all available options to combat cancer at their disposal, ACI is in a unique position to further cancer care and management not only in the country but even in the Southeast Asian region.<\/p>\n
