Stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition with hypertension serving as the biggest risk factor. Elevated blood pressure continues to pose a problem in the country due to the seemingly lack of awareness about hypertension and promotion of high blood pressure prevention, detection and control among Filipinos.

The number of Filipinos afflicted with hypertension continues to increase as many of them are unaware that they have high blood pressure. Some of them only find out they are hypertensive after they had a heart attack or stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. In 2022, the recorded cases of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, reached more than 63,000, making it the third leading cause of death in the country, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

To address the country’s growing cases of stroke, OMRON Healthcare recently introduced on its website the Stroke Risk Calculator, a tool that will help individuals assess their risk of stroke in the next five to 10 years based on their eating habits, medical history, and current lifestyle. The new feature also offers information about the top contributors to an individual’s stroke risk to help them make better choices and necessary lifestyle changes.

The Stroke Risk Calculator is developed by Professor Valery Feigin of the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand with the help of over 300 prominent stroke experts from 102 countries, making it the world’s largest international collaborative mobile health initiative of its kind. It is also endorsed by the World Stroke Organization and World Heart Federation, among many other global health organizations.

The Stroke Risk Calculator reduces Filipinos’ risks of suffering a stroke. The tool comprises of 21 questions and only takes about three to five minutes to finish. Guided by the American Framingham Heart Study, the questionnaire makes predictions depending on one’s habits pertaining to diet, drinking, and exercise as well as medical history such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Age, ethnicity, sex, height and weight are also taken into consideration.
