The Southeast Asia representative was Alif Kazman, a marine biologist from Malaysia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alif\nand six other advocates concluded their 10-day adventure at the SHEBA\u00ae Hope\nReef located in Bontosua, an island in the Spermonde Archipelago off the coast\nof Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. They have had the opportunity to work\nwith the local community, receive practical restoration training and restore an\narea of coral reef using Reef Stars, the \u2018hero\u2019 of the Mars Assisted Reef\nRestoration System. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs\na young scientist, it was an honor for me to be selected as a SHEBA\u00ae Hope\nAdvocate to represent Southeast Asia and to have the opportunity to learn more\nabout the unique research program that supports reef restoration. It was\neye-opening to see the scale of the SHEBA\u00ae Hope Reef and its impact on the\nlocal community, researchers and field officers who work together. The\nexperience was once-in-a-lifetime for me, and I am eager to impart knowledge\nabout the importance of marine conservation to my peers and the younger\ngeneration,\u201d said Alif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nSHEBA\u00ae Hope Advocate Program is part of a global reef restoration movement\nentitled SHEBA Hope Grows. The program began with the creation of a 46x14m\nstructure spelling the letters H-O-P-E in Bontosua in 2019, using restored\ncoral. &nbsp;What was once a barren and lifeless underwater\nlandscape, is now a thriving coral reef ecosystem with coral\ngrowth increasing from 2% to 70%, fish populations increasing by 260% as well\nas a 64% rise in the number of fish species.&nbsp; By 2029, SHEBA\u00ae\naim to restore more than 185,000 square meters of\ncoral reefs \u2014 roughly the size of 148 Olympic swimming pools \u2014 at key sites\naround the world.<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to offer this\nonce-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the seven advocates to take part in the\nworld\u2019s largest coral reef restoration program first-hand. With over\n250 applications from the US, UK, Germany, and Southeast Asia, including more\nthan 50 applications from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines,\nwe are thrilled with the final seven advocates who were selected based on their\npassion for ocean conservation. The impact of the work that the Advocates are\ndoing is critical in preserving and restoring the beauty of our ocean and\nensuring our future has fish. The program is a\ncollective of long-lasting and meaningful partnerships that are expanding\nimpact far beyond the coral reefs SHEB\u00ae are directly restoring \u2013 including on\nthe local communities, tourism and education in Indonesia\u201d said Philippa\nMansell, Indonesia Marine Program Lead, Mars Sustainable Solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conjunction with the SHEBA Hope Advocate program, the SHEBA brand is also\ncollaborating with selected retailers in Philippines to collect donations which\nwill be used to create Reef Stars to be planted in the iconic SHEBA Hope Reef in Bontosua Island, Makassar,\nSulawesi Indonesia.
