It increases the risks of heart, brain, kidney, and other diseases.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elevated blood pressure is a major health issue as an estimated 1.13-billion people worldwide are hypertensive, two-thirds of whom live in low- and middle-income countries. Global deaths attributed to hypertension-related complications reached 10.8-million in 2019, or about 19% of total deaths annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that registered deaths attributed to hypertension and cardiovascular-related diseases in the Philippines reached 208,225 in 2020, considered as a top killer disease which represents 36% of the total deaths in the country. Likewise, deaths and burden of disease attributable to hypertension in the Philippines significantly grew over the last three decades. From 11% in 1990, deaths due to hypertension rose to 21% in 2017, while disability due to ill-health grew from 4% in 1990 to 11% in 2017. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of Filipinos afflicted with hypertension continues to increase as many of them are unaware that they have high blood pressure. Some of them only find out they are hypertensive after they had a heart attack or stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the country\u2019s growing hypertension cases, the Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH), together with OMRON Healthcare Philippines, the local government of Manila, and other partners, continues to hold the annual May Measurement Month (MMM) campaign this year with a new implementation approach. Having been deferred in 2020 in consideration of the prevailing COVID-19 situation across the globe, the campaign encourages Filipinos to monitor their blood pressure at home and promote hypertension prevention, detection and control. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Society of Hypertension (ISH) made some changes to the format of this year\u2019s campaign to meet its objectives even while complying with the safety protocols implemented in participating countries. The campaign is usually held on World Hypertension Day, which is observed every May 17, but MMM 2021 is extended and will run from May 1 to November 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s campaign is centered on encouraging individuals to participate by monitoring their blood pressure at home. The captured data can be logged at the MMM official website or the MMM mobile app. Screening sites will also be established in key locations, as approved by the Department of Health.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Manila City Mayor\u2019s office is supporting PSH and its cause by supporting the launch of the campaign, as well as the actual submission process of captured data from onsite screening efforts. OMRON, the official equipment partner for MMM since its inception in 2017, has also pledged more than 1,000 BP monitors in support of the MMM 2021. OMRON aims to deliver technologies that can help Filipinos attain a healthy heart during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PSH is also rolling out reminders on the proper method of taking blood pressure readings. Apart from this, PSH is pushing government to improve BP screening facilities and healthcare systems. The campaign aims to reduce the global burden of disease and death caused by high blood pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting the spotlight on increasing access to blood pressure screening, the MMM campaign got the confirmation of participation of 89 countries this year.
