A recent study published in the Archives of Dermatology<\/em> reflects something that many skin cancer experts are very concerned with: lack of knowledge within the public about the inherent dangers of tanning beds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For one such expert, Dr. Marcy Street, a board certified dermatologist in Lansing MI and the nation\u2019s first African American female MOHS surgeon in the US, the news is unfortunately not surprising.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a skin cancer expert, it is exceptionally unfortunate that there are still people who aren\u2019t aware that tanning beds can contribute to skin cancer. The situation harkens back to the inception of cigarettes. People thought they didn\u2019t do any harm, and it wasn\u2019t until much later that the health effects began to be seen in real terms. I wonder how many people would be willing to use tanning beds if they had a warning notice on the door that the person might get skin cancer from using them. Maybe we\u2019ll get there in the next few years,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Among other characteristics that the study found, a certain percentage (18.3% women and 6.3% of men) were found to use both spray tanning combined with tanning bed use.<\/p>\n

A subset of the study of 821 people were asked what they knew about skin cancer prevention. A mere 13.1% of women and 4.2% of men said that avoiding tanning beds was a means by which one could prevent skin cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just not nearly enough information circulating about how very life threatening tanning beds are,\u201d says Dr. Street. \u201cMore should be done to make the public as aware as possible about the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n
