{"id":5056,"date":"2019-11-07T23:58:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T23:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2019-11-08T00:02:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T00:02:11","slug":"shortened-sleep-may-negatively-affect-womens-bone-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/shortened-sleep-may-negatively-affect-womens-bone-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortened sleep may affect women&#8217;s bone health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Getting too little sleep was linked with a higher risk of having low bone mineral density (BMD) and developing osteoporosis, as reported in a recent&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asbmr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/15234681\"><em><strong>Journal of Bone and Mineral Research<\/strong><\/em><\/a><strong>&nbsp;study of postmenopausal women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the study of 11,084 postmenopausal women, those who reported sleeping 5 hours or less per night had lower BMD at all four sites assessed&#8211;whole body, total hip, neck, and spine&#8211;compared with women who reported sleeping 7 hours per night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After adjustments, women reporting five hours or less per night had 22% and 63% higher risks of experiencing low bone mass and osteoporosis of the hip, respectively. Similar results were seen with the spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"445\" src=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sleep.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5057\" srcset=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sleep.jpg 620w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sleep-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption><em>Women reporting five hours or less per night had 22% and 63% higher risks of experiencing low bone mass and osteoporosis of the hip, respectively. Similar results were seen with the spine.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our study suggests that sleep may negatively impact bone health, adding to the list of the negative health impacts of poor sleep.
