US-based National Safe Boating Council, an organization of the\u00a0North American Safe Boating Campaign<\/a>, encourages boaters to be responsible at all times while on the water.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Every time I speak with someone affected by a boating accident, I’m more motivated to share about the importance of responsible boating \u2013 and that includes always wearing a life jacket,” said\u00a0Rachel Johnson<\/span>, CAE, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

US Coast Guard statistics show that in the US alone, drowning was the reported cause of death in more than three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2016, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.<\/p>\n

The National Safe Boating Council shares these boating safety tips for all boaters:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Wear a life jacket.<\/b>\u00a0Make sure everyone is wearing a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. New innovative styles provide mobility and flexibility during water activities.<\/li>\n
  • Check equipment.\u00a0<\/b>Schedule a free vessel safety check with your local\u00a0Coast Guard Auxiliary to make sure you have all the essential equipment.<\/li>\n
  • Make a float plan.<\/b>\u00a0Let family and friends know where you’re going and when you will return.<\/li>\n
  • Use an engine cut-off device.<\/b>\u00a0An engine cut-off device is a proven safety device to stop the boat’s engine should the operator unexpectedly fall overboard.<\/li>\n
  • Watch the weather.<\/b>\u00a0Always check the forecast before departing on the water and frequently during your excursion.<\/li>\n
  • Know what’s going on around you at all times.\u00a0<\/b>Nearly a quarter of all reported boating accidents in 2016 were caused by operator inattention or improper lookout.<\/li>\n
  • Know where you’re going and travel at safe speeds.\u00a0<\/b>Familiarize yourself with local boating speed zones and always travel at a safe speed.<\/li>\n
  • Never boat under the influence.<\/b>\u00a0A BUI is involved in one-third of all recreational boating fatalities.<\/li>\n
  • Keep in touch.<\/b>\u00a0VHF radios, satellite phones, EPIRB or personal locator beacon, and cell phones can all be important devices in an emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
