To help families stay safe, the American Red Cross is issuing the top six hurricane preparedness tips should a hurricane or tropical storm head for your community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/emergency-kit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3573\" src=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/emergency-kit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"622\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/emergency-kit.jpg 622w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/emergency-kit-300x208.jpg 300w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/emergency-kit-50x35.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are the top six things you should do now to be ready for hurricane season:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Talk with household members and\u00a0<a class=\"linkOnClick\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-include=\"300466171\">create an evacuation plan<\/a>. Be prepared to evacuate quickly and evacuate if told to do so.<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"linkOnClick\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/prepare-for-emergencies\/be-red-cross-ready\/get-a-kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-include=\"300466171\">Build an emergency kit<\/a>\u00a0with a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, medications, supplies for an infant if applicable, a multi-purpose tool, personal hygiene items, copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, extra cash, blankets, maps of the area, and emergency contact information.<\/li>\n<li>Get access to\u00a0<a class=\"linkOnClick\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/#q=NOAA+Radio+Station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-include=\"300466171\">NOAA radio broadcasts<\/a>. Purchase a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio in the\u00a0<a class=\"linkOnClick\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcrossstore.org\/shopper\/prodlist.aspx?new=1&amp;searchText=NOAA%20radio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-include=\"300466171\">Red Cross Store<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or invest in one-half inch marine plywood that is pre-cut to fit your doors and windows. Identify a place to store lawn furniture, toys, gardening tools and trash cans (away from stairs and exits) to prevent them from being moved by high winds and possibly hurting someone.<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"linkOnClick\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/informed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-include=\"300466171\">Be informed.<\/a>\u00a0Learn about your community&#8217;s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets.
