{"id":3320,"date":"2017-06-13T06:46:53","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T06:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/?p=3320"},"modified":"2017-06-13T06:46:53","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T06:46:53","slug":"those-who-eat-pasta-have-better-overall-diet-quality-new-research-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/those-who-eat-pasta-have-better-overall-diet-quality-new-research-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Those who eat pasta have better overall diet quality, new research shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p><strong>Pasta is a convenient, nutritious, easy-to-prepare meal for families.\u00a0 Pasta pleases even the pickiest of young eaters.\u00a0 And now, even more good news: new research shows that pasta consumption in children and adolescents is associated with a better diet quality than that of children who do not eat pasta.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3321\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pasta-lovers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3321\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3321\" src=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pasta-lovers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pasta-lovers.jpg 750w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pasta-lovers-300x208.jpg 300w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pasta-lovers-50x35.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO COURTESY OF www.pastafits.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The research, which was presented at the 2017 Experimental Biology conference at the end of April in <span class=\"xn-location\">Chicago<\/span>, demonstrated that young pasta-eaters have greater intakes of important vitamins and minerals and lower intakes of saturated fat and total fat in the diet compared to their peers who do not consume pasta.<\/p>\n<p>The research, &#8220;Pasta Consumption in American Children and Adolescents is Associated with Greater Daily Intake of Shortfall Nutrients as Defined by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines, Improved Diet Quality and Lower Added Sugar Intake,&#8221; was conducted by Nutritional Strategies, Inc. on behalf of the National Pasta Association.\u00a0 The study examined\u00a0associations between pasta consumption, shortfall nutrient intakes as defined by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines (2015 DG) and diet quality in comparison to non-pasta consumption in U.S. children and adolescents (ages 2-18).\u00a0 Pasta consumption was defined as all dry domestic and imported pasta\/noodle varieties made with only wheat and no egg.\u00a0 The data review did not look at any health outcomes associated with pasta consumption except for the ones specified below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p><u>From the analysis, researchers identified a number of key positive nutritional dietary patterns associated with children and adolescents who eat pasta as part of their diet compared to those who don&#8217;t eat pasta. \u00a0They are<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>Better overall diet quality (as measured by USDA&#8217;s Healthy Eating Index-2010 scale)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Greater intake of key shortfall nutrients like dietary fiber, folate, iron, magnesium and vitamin E<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Lower daily intakes of saturated fat and total fat<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>No significant associations were seen with body weight, waist circumference and body mass index<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pasta has long been celebrated as one of everyone&#8217;s favorite foods and is advocated by nutritionists for its good nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Good nutrition is critical to the developing minds and bodies of children and adolescents.
