Climate change solutions-provider World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) said that offsetting the cost of expensive fossil-fuels saved each Pinoy consumer 5.67 centavos, simultaneously generating more local jobs and reducing the country\u2019s share of carbon emissions by an impressive 2.8 million tonnes.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/WWF.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2753\" src=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/WWF.jpg\" alt=\"WWF\" width=\"642\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/WWF.jpg 642w, http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/WWF-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24363\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24362\" lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWith the government\u2019s Philippine Development Plan (PDP) for 2017 until 2022 now being finalized, we challenge the government to increase the share of RE to 50% by 2030,\u201d explains WWF-Philippines climate and energy programme head Atty. Gia Ibay. \u201cGreen and sustainable development fits perfectly with the administration\u2019s mantra of <i>Malasakit, Pagbabago at Kaunlaran<\/i> because RE provides affordable, sustainable and accessible electricity \u2013 especially for remote communities.\u201d<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24368\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24367\" lang=\"EN-US\">Clean and renewable energy sources like geothermal, hydro, wind, biomass and solar energy are among the country\u2019s few competitive advantages \u2013 especially since it has no significant deposits of fossil-fuels. Its continued dependence on imported fuel has made Philippine electricity rates among the highest in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24372\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">R<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24371\" lang=\"EN-US\">elying more on RE has brought down the cost of electricity with fuel diversity, shielding Filipinos from price fluctuations as no fuel cost is incurred. This shows the care or<i id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_24370\"> Malasakit<\/i> of the government, particularly coupled with increased energy access with distributed RE reaching off-grid communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25389\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25388\" lang=\"EN-US\">Renewables currently account for just 30% of the country\u2019s energy mix. The government-led National Renewable Energy Plan (NREP) aims to triple RE capacity to 15,304 MW by 2030 &#8211; but WWF thinks it can do much better. \u201cWe urge the government to ramp-up its RE efforts by fast-tracking RE mechanism implementation, setting clear targets on RE and promoting a more level playing field for all energy-generating technologies,\u201d adds Ibay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25395\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25394\" lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe PDP should reflect the change or <i>Pagbabago <\/i>that we now see in the global arena \u2013 the shift away from the traditional mindset that the solution to our power needs is through the same old type of thermal-fired plants like coal. Our national development plan should realize the move towards distributed energy systems as it fits with the country\u2019s archipelagic nature, while increasing grid reliability, decreasing costs and improving resilience to natural calamities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25410\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">For years, WWF-Philippines has advocated for a shift to RE while <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">optimizing energy usage.<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25409\" lang=\"EN-US\"> WWF\u2019s study on <i>Building Momentum for Low Carbon Development <\/i>presents a viable roadmap for 100% RE, which is possible since the country hosts a vast potential of RE resources. WWF points out that the country can further develop <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25408\" class=\"yiv6767327161gmail-laman\">1200 MW of geothermal, 2308 MW of sustainable hydro, 235 MW of biomass and 7404 MW of wind generation capacity even before 2030. \u00a0Further, WWF-Philippines has supported local power development planning to supplement distributed energy as it empowers the locals to craft their own energy path.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25402\" class=\"yiv6767327161MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486021360234_25404\" lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen how RE can save us money by shielding us from the price volatility of fossil-fuels like gas, oil and coal \u2013 90% of which are imported at wildly-fluctuating prices,\u201d adds Ibay. \u201cShifting to renewables is our least expensive chance to achieve energy independence while fighting climate change.
