Hispanic Americans specifically have a higher prevalence of diabetes than non-Hispanic Americans.

Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Studies have found that modest lifestyle changes, such as choosing foods wisely, exercising regularly, and reducing stress levels as well as small amounts of weight loss in the range of 5 – 10% can prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes among high-risk adults.

What most people aren’t aware of is that soluble fiber also plays an important role in digestive and immune health. Since soluble fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body can’t break down, it helps control blood sugar levels. High-fiber foods tend to be more filling than low-fiber foods, so including them in the diet ensures that the same amount of food satisfies for longer.

“Educating people about the effect excessive sugar consumption has on their health and about viable alternatives like increasing soluble fiber intake is a major step towards our goal of reducing health related issues such as obesity and type 2 diabetes,” says Nguyen. “Varying by locations, the free program will provide information on the benefits of a more conscious sugar intake. We will have associates on hand to answer questions and serve food samples. In addition, we will also have a specialist on call on the day of events to provide answers to more in-depth questions.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most minority populations have a prevalence of type 2 diabetes that is two to six times greater than that of the general population.
