{"id":11316,"date":"2026-08-04T23:34:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T15:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/?p=11316"},"modified":"2026-08-04T23:34:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T15:34:29","slug":"why-a-uti-hurts-and-why-that-might-be-a-good-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/zestmag.com\/online\/why-a-uti-hurts-and-why-that-might-be-a-good-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Why a UTI hurts \u2014 and why that might be a good thing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Australian researchers have discovered a previously overlooked group of bladder nerves that help detect urinary tract infections (UTIs) and trigger the body\u2019s response to clear them, providing a potential new target for future bladder pain therapies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2604124123\">study<\/a>&nbsp;shows that bladder nerves located close to the lining of the bladder act as a frontline infection sensor, helping the body recognise UTIs and trigger responses that reduce the severity and spread of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide, with more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S266635462500002X\">400 million cases<\/a>&nbsp;reported every year.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/conditionsandtreatments\/urinary-tract-infections-uti\">Nearly one in three women will experience UTIs before the age of 24<\/a>, and many elderly people and those with bladder issues from spinal cord injuries can experience multiple UTIs in a single year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms often include frequent urination, a sudden urge to urinate, pain during urination, and pelvic discomfort can be debilitating for some patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flinders University\u2019s\u00a0Dr Luke Grundy\u00a0says that while scientists have long understood how the bladder senses as it fills and triggers urination, the role of a specialised group of bladder nerves near the bladder lining has remained unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost bladder nerves act like a fuel gauge, telling the brain when the bladder is filling up and needs emptying,\u201d says Dr Grundy, Head of the NeuroUrology Research Group at Flinders University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe nerves we studied in this research are different. They sit close to the bladder lining and appear to act more like an early warning system, detecting infection and inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey don&#8217;t just sense infection. They help coordinate the body&#8217;s response to it by triggering pain and urinary frequency, behaviours that appear to help clear bacteria from the bladder as part of the body\u2019s defence system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead author and recently graduated PhD student Dr Cindy Tay says the discovery changes how these nerves are understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese mucosal nerves have puzzled scientists for almost two decades because they stay quiet while the bladder fills and empties, which is the main job of the bladder,\u201d says Dr Tay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve found is that they have a hidden job \u2014 acting as an early warning system that springs into action the moment infection takes hold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team developed a novel method to selectively study a specialised group of sensory nerves in the bladder lining of mice, revealing that while these nerves play little role in normal bladder function, they become highly responsive during a UTI and help detect and respond to infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the bladder is healthy, these nerves are relatively quiet, but during a urinary tract infection they become highly sensitive and respond to the presence of bacteria and inflammation,\u201d says Dr Grundy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt may feel unpleasant, but urinating more frequently actually helps clear the infection by flushing out the harmful bacteria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study also helps explain why people with conditions affecting nerve function may be more prone to recurrent or severe UTIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the nerves that detect infection aren\u2019t working properly, the body may not respond as effectively,\u201d says Dr Grundy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building on previous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2025\/02\/06\/relief-could-be-on-the-way-for-uti-sufferers-dealing-with-debilitating-pain\/\">research<\/a>, the new study reveals a deeper understanding of how UTIs affect bladder function and the nervous system, and could help develop new treatments that target these nerves to relieve UTI-related symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur findings provide new insight into how the bladder detects and responds to infection, helping explain the biological processes that drive the pain, urgency and discomfort commonly experienced during UTIs,\u201d says Dr Grundy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers say the next challenge is to develop therapies that ease the pain and urgency associated with UTIs while preserving the protective role these nerves play in fighting infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper, \u2018<em>Bladder mucosal afferents detect UTI
