People just come here to take pics of the town\u2019s name\u2026 basically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name is the one, if not the only attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As FYI: Even locals have a hard time pronouncing the name. We asked someone to do that for us. We were told, though, that there\u2019s a shortened version, Llanfair PG\u2026 which isn\u2019t a mouthful <em>na<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ikalawa<\/em>, the name was popularized in the 19th century, mainly as a publicity stunt. The town, of course, supersedes this popularized name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ikatlo<\/em>, the name is usually translated to: St. Mary\u2019s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meaning actually revolves around local landmarks, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>St Mary\u2019s church,\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the \u201cSwellies\u201d (the pool\/hollow of the whirlpool in the Menai Strait)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St Tysilio\u2019s church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ika-apat<\/em>, in truth, this isn\u2019t the longest name for any place.\u00a0 Even Bangkok\u2019s ceremonial name is longer. Then there\u2019s that town in New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is commonly described as the longest one-word place name in Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u2026 since the name was crafted for tourism, exactly how many tourists come over? Roughly 200,000 a year.
